History of The Woodshire

This is a story about a building we’ve named “The Woodshire”.

Godfrey Philip Payzant is credited with constructing what has come to be known as The Woodshire Inn and Cocoa Pesto, at 494 King Street in Windsor, Nova Scotia. He was born in 1814 to a family of French and New English descent.

Mr. Payzant was a prominent and instrumental member of the Windsor community. He began as a successful grocer and became an outstanding entrepreneur, involved with The Windsor Fire Insurance Company, The Windsor Gas Company, and The Windsor Cotton Mill Company and became the President of The Commercial Bank of Windsor.

When he died in 1896, he donated a generous sum of money to the building of a new public hospital for Windsor. Previously, only one hospital had existed in the province at Halifax. His descendents lived in the home for many more years. The spectacular building was known as The Paulin Residence. Following the year of Payzant’s death, The Great Fire of 1897 took a devastating toll on Windsor. Four fifths of the town was destroyed.

The Paulin Residence was miraculously spared demise due to the diligent efforts of firefighters and volunteers alike. Across the road, to the south of what was formerly known as Chapel Lane (today Albert Street), The Catholic Chapel burned to the ground. What remains today are the headstones from the original cemetery and the new place of worship: St. John’s Catholic Church, built from stone stands on King Street.

For many years between the 1950s and mid 1970s, 494 King Street housed the extraordinary Sherwood Inn. It is rumored to have been a place of elegant distinction, sophisticated service and fine food. We welcome any and all recounts that guests and former visitors to the Sherwood Inn would like to share with us … we intend to create a section of this site exclusively for these memories to be shared.

About Windsor

Situated on the Minas Basin of The Bay of Fundy in Atlantic Canada, where two strong rivers meet: the Avon and the St. Croix. Windsor is a community of approximately 3700 residents. Windsor is 66 kilometres northwest of Halifax, approximately 20 kilometres from the eastern end of the Annapolis Valley.

The Dominion Atlantic Railway connected Windsor with Halifax, Yarmouth and Truro. In turn, Windsor has facilitated many travelers by rail, water, carriage and automobile amongst ports in New England and throughout the Bay of Fundy. We like to think of ourselves as centrally located on Atlantic Canada’s Coast.

My new husband and I chose to spend a night at The Woodshire Inn after our wedding to get a little down time. The room we stayed in (Room #2) is absolutely stunning!! The owners, Scott and Marilyn have done a beautiful job with the renovations! The bathroom is massive and the jacuzzi tub, big enough for two. The King size bed is super comfy and I haven’t slept so soundly and for such a long duration, in what is surely over a year- 9.5 hrs!! The Inn is very quiet and the fact they don’t open until dinnertime during the week allowed us to sleep in later than normal. For breakfast, Scott was overly accommodating of my wheat allergy and personally whipped us both up a delicious omelette breakfast. Even though I can’t eat it, the sourdough toast that came with my husband’s meal had me drooling! The food in their restaurant, Cocoa Pesto and EAT BBQ is delicious!! This is the fourth meal I have had there and it is always fantastic! Not to sound too cheesy, but you can tell that Scott and his team cook with love and are passionate about what they do because nothing is ever sent out of the kitchen without being absolutely top quality!! I think we will be making this little overnight getaway a regular affair!!

Room Tip: Both rooms are stunning!!
